"Batman, Robin, Zorro and Wonder Woman were among the HEROES "Helping Each other Reach Opportunities and Educational Success" at a scavenger hunt put on by the brand new organization.
"We thought we should spice it up a little bit," said Jessica Gandy, who came up with the idea as a Club Leader for HEROES.
The organization, started by recent SCC grad Micaela Smith, was formed to support non-traditional students (like those in English as a Second Language, General Education Degree or Career Education Options programs), but their Tuesday meetings and events are open to everyone. The group also meets on Thursdays, but generally those meetings are for more established members of the group, who have been to at least two or three of the Tuesday open meetings.
The scavenger hunt was a creative way to provide a tour of the campus, with each clue hinting at services that can be found in various places around campus. The Math Learning Center, Writing and Learning Studio, the Student Leadership Center and Theater were all destinations, and students learned a little something from each one. At the theater, they even got a little taste of the upcoming play being rehearsed, "Big Love."
At the end of it all, the group got together for food and a movie – Freedom Writers.
"It was really fun," Club Leader Annika Fithian said. "We had some obstacles, though." The budget wasn't approved until a couple days beforehand, Chartwell's (the vendor servicing the PUB) makes it difficult to have any type of food besides theirs in the building, and due to copyright laws it was even difficult to find a movie they could play.
HEROES will be meeting again for an "End of the Quarter Celebration" from 12:30 – 2:30 p.m. on March 6 in the PUB Quiet Dining Room."
